A radiator that is warm at the bottom but cold across the top is usually not failing – it is often holding trapped air. Learning how to bleed radiators properly can restore even heat, reduce cold spots and help your heating system work as it should. It is a straightforward job for many homeowners, provided it is done carefully and you know when a heating issue needs professional attention.

Why radiators need bleeding

As a central heating system circulates water, small amounts of air can collect inside radiators. Air rises above the water, so it commonly gathers at the top of the panel and prevents hot water from reaching that area. You may notice that a radiator takes longer to warm up, feels cool at the top, makes gurgling noises or remains colder than the rest of the house.

Bleeding releases this trapped air through the small valve at the top of the radiator. Once the air has escaped and water reaches the valve, the radiator can fill properly again.

This is different from a radiator that is cold at the bottom. Lower cold patches often point to sludge, rust or debris settled inside the radiator. Bleeding alone will not clear this, and repeatedly opening the bleed valve may not improve the problem. A heating engineer can advise whether a system clean, radiator removal or another repair is appropriate.

What you need before bleeding radiators

The job requires very little equipment: a radiator bleed key, or a suitable flat-head screwdriver on some modern valves, plus an old towel or cloth and a small container to catch any water. Keep the key somewhere accessible afterwards, as radiators may need occasional attention during the heating season.

Before you start, switch your heating off and allow the radiators to cool. Opening a bleed valve while the system is hot can release very hot water and makes the job harder to carry out safely. Turning the heating off also gives trapped air time to settle at the top of each radiator.

If you have a sealed system, such as a combi boiler installation, look at the pressure gauge before starting. Make a note of the reading while the system is cold. Bleeding radiators can reduce system pressure slightly, and you may need to top it back up afterwards. Your boiler manual will confirm the recommended cold pressure, but it is commonly around 1 to 1.5 bar.

How to bleed radiators properly, step by step

Start with the radiators on the lowest floor, ideally beginning with the one furthest from the boiler, then work methodically around the house. Leave upper-floor radiators until later, as air naturally rises through the system. If your boiler manufacturer gives a different sequence, follow its guidance.

1. Find the bleed valve

The bleed valve is normally positioned near the top corner of the radiator, on one side. It is a small square fitting or slotted screw, usually separate from the larger valves that control water flow at the bottom.

Place your towel beneath the valve and hold your container close underneath. Even a well-maintained radiator can release a small amount of discoloured water, so protect carpets, painted surfaces and furnishings nearby.

2. Open the valve slowly

Fit the radiator key securely, then turn it anti-clockwise very gently. A quarter-turn is often enough. You should hear a soft hissing sound as air escapes.

Do not fully remove the valve or force it if it is stiff. The valve only needs to open enough to let air out, and forcing a corroded fitting can cause a leak. If the key slips, the valve is damaged or water starts coming out around the fitting rather than through its centre, close it if possible and arrange professional help.

3. Wait for water to appear

Keep the valve open until the hissing stops and a steady trickle of water begins to emerge. This shows that the trapped air has been released and the radiator is full of water.

Close the valve by turning it clockwise. It should be snug, but avoid overtightening it. Excess force can damage the valve and make future bleeding more difficult.

4. Repeat throughout the property

Move to the next radiator and repeat the process. Some radiators may release no air at all, which is perfectly normal. If water appears immediately, simply close the valve again.

Take particular care with upstairs radiators, towel rails and radiators that are rarely used, as these can be more likely to collect air. If a towel rail has two bleed points, check the manufacturer’s instructions before opening either one.

5. Check boiler pressure and restart the heating

Once every radiator has been checked, return to the boiler pressure gauge. On a sealed system, the pressure may have dropped below the recommended level. If it has, use the filling loop or built-in filling arrangement exactly as described in your boiler manual. Do not overfill the system.

Turn the heating back on and allow it to run until the radiators are fully warm. Check that heat is spread evenly from top to bottom and listen for any continuing gurgling sounds. Recheck the bleed valves for drips after the system has warmed up.

If the boiler pressure is low after bleeding

A small pressure drop after bleeding is normal because a small amount of water has left the system. Many modern boilers will stop working if pressure falls too low, often showing a fault code or warning light.

Topping up is usually a simple task, but it depends on the boiler and its filling arrangement. Add water gradually, watch the pressure gauge throughout and stop once it reaches the cold-pressure level stated by the manufacturer. Close the filling loop or valves fully when finished.

If your system repeatedly loses pressure, do not keep topping it up without investigating. Persistent pressure loss can indicate a leak, a faulty pressure relief valve or an issue with the expansion vessel. These are matters for a qualified heating engineer, particularly where boiler safety controls are involved.

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is bleeding radiators while they are hot. Aside from the risk of scalding, hot water and circulating air can make it difficult to tell when the radiator has been bled correctly.

Another is assuming every cold radiator contains air. A radiator that is cold at the top is a strong sign of trapped air, while one that is cold at the bottom may have sludge restricting water flow. A completely cold radiator could also have a stuck thermostatic radiator valve, a closed lockshield valve, a balancing issue or a wider boiler fault.

It is also best not to bleed radiators too often. A system that needs frequent bleeding may be drawing in air through a leak, suffering from internal corrosion or developing another fault. Bleeding treats the immediate symptom, but repeated air build-up needs a proper diagnosis.

When to call a heating engineer

Contact a qualified engineer if the bleed valve is seized, damaged or leaking; if several radiators stay cold after bleeding; or if boiler pressure keeps falling. You should also seek advice if your heating makes persistent banging, kettling or gurgling noises, or if the water released from radiators is very dark and dirty.
