A shower that turns unexpectedly cold when someone runs the kitchen tap is more than an annoyance. It is often a sign that the shower type is not well matched to the home’s water and heating system. When weighing up an electric shower versus mixer shower, the right choice depends less on appearance and more on your water pressure, boiler arrangement, electrical capacity and household routine.

Both can provide a comfortable daily shower when correctly specified and professionally installed. However, they heat water in very different ways, which affects performance, running costs and what is involved in fitting or replacing one.

Electric shower versus mixer shower: the key difference

An electric shower takes cold water directly from the mains supply and heats it inside the unit as it flows through. It has its own heating element, so it does not use water heated by your boiler or cylinder. The temperature and flow are controlled on the shower itself, although the available flow rate will vary with the incoming mains pressure and the temperature of the cold water entering the property.

A mixer shower is often the preferred option for homeowners who want a stronger, more luxurious shower experience. For homes with a modern, correctly sized combi boiler, a mixer shower can be an efficient and straightforward choice. The boiler heats water as required, and a good-quality thermostatic valve helps keep the shower stable if another tap is opened. The final result depends on the boiler’s hot-water output, the cold mains flow rate and the condition of the pipework, rather than the shower valve alone.

Properties with a gravity-fed system need more careful assessment. If the cold-water tank is in the loft and the hot-water cylinder is in an airing cupboard, the natural pressure may be too low for some mixer showers. A compatible shower pump may improve performance, but it needs to be selected and installed correctly. Pumps are not normally appropriate for combi boiler systems, and incorrect arrangements can lead to poor operation or damage.

Mixer showers are also dependent on the heating and hot-water system. If the boiler fails, there may be no hot shower until it is repaired.
